 Athithi Tamil Movie Review

Starring Nanda, Ananya and Nikesh Ram in the lead, Athithi is a remake of the classic thriller “Butterfly on a Wheel”, starring Pierce Brosnan, Maria Bello in the lead. Earlier butterfly on a wheel was also remade in Malayalam as Cocktail. Thambi Ramiah, V. V. Prasanna, and Senrayan form the supporting cast.

Athithi is directed by Bharathan who is known for his previous Azhagiya Thamizh Magan. Bharathan is notable for his dialogue writing skills who also has a nickname punch Bharathan. Earlier he has scripted dialogues for movies like Dhool, Ghilli and Veeram.

When Nandha and Ananya’s happy lifestyle is suddenly interrupted and turned upside down by a threatening and forceful kidnapper, the pair is left with no choice but to follow the forceful and hard demands set to them by this man.

Both Nanda and Ananya impresses with their acting skills. Credit has to be given for the way they enacted their roles. Debutante Nikesh Ram hasn’t had an impact as the lead pair and largely disappoints ( Pierce Brosnan plays the role in the original version). His beard clad face sometimes masks his expression which could have been avoided. Though Thambi Ramaiah does his job well, poorly crafted comedy plots make his role superfluous for the movie.

Cinematographer Jai has done a subdued work to suit the style of the movie. His camera angles and lighting aptly suits the theme of the movie. Praveen a National award winner for editing the movie Aaranya Kandam has done a neat and commendable job in Athithi. Music director Bharadwaj has made a rather forgetful comeback.

Though Athithi is packed with thrills, suspense and tension, the movie rolls at a very slow pace. The movie happens on a single day which starts in the morning and ends at 12 p.m. What could have been an excellent thriller is mostly spoiled by it’s slow pace and dull narrative style.

Lots of holes but the movie is somehow entertaining. Worth seeing for something different! This drama/thriller has some good moments of suspense and a genre which has it’s surprises. On the whole Adithi is a good movie with solid performances and twist ending.
